Developed in partnership with faculty and staff at the University of Miami, The Power of Science celebrates the accomplishments of the scientists who have come before us and shines a light on research happening locally in Miami today. An interactive journey through the processes of scientific research, perseverance, and discovery, the 8,000 sq. ft exhibition invites users to step into the shoes of researchers, explorers, and inventors at the forefront of four scientific frontiers: our oceans, environment, bodies, and universe.
Located along Miami’s sparkling downtown waterfront, the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science (Frost Science) opened its state-of-the-art facility to the public in 2016. At the heart of this beloved institution is the Living Core—an aquarium composed of marine habitats and interactive experiences that place people eye-to-eye with the region’s underwater life. The highlight of this experience is Thinc’s revolutionary 500,000-gallon Gulf Stream Tank, home to an array of sharks and rays, which depicts the open ocean where sea life knows no physical boundaries. Dubbed ‘The Martini Tank,’ this enormous marine habitat is suspended above the Ocean Gallery and viewed through the mesmerizing Oculus. In 2019 Thinc returned to design a visitor experience for the Ocean Gallery that sits directly beneath the ‘The Martini Tank’.
Through a mix of rare specimens, objects, digital media, and interactive experiences, The Power of Science inspires the next generation of innovators to be curious, patient, and persistent. By leveraging the Museum’s relationship with the University of Miami and its transformative research, the exhibition reminds us that science is all around us; science enables us to better understand ourselves, our planet, and our place in the cosmos.
